About

Anasazi State Park Museum sits along Scenic Byway 12 in Boulder, Utah, preserving the remains of one of the largest known Ancestral Puebloan village sites west of the Colorado River. The museum draws travelers who are road-tripping the Byway between Torrey and Escalante — Boulder is roughly 30 miles southeast of Torrey — and want more than scenery on that stretch of road.

What the Museum Covers

The collection focuses on a village occupied from roughly the 11th through 12th centuries. Artifacts excavated from the site — pottery, projectile points, tools, and jewelry — are displayed alongside interpretive exhibits that place the Ancestral Puebloans in the broader context of the Colorado Plateau. An outdoor excavation area lets visitors see the actual village footprint, and a full-scale replica of a six-room dwelling gives a tangible sense of how these structures were built and used.

Planning Your Visit

The museum is operated by Utah State Parks and is open daily, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It rates 4.5 out of 5 stars across more than 730 Google reviews — solid marks for a small state park museum. The stop pairs well with a drive down Byway 12: Escalante is another 25 miles or so to the south, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument begins just outside Boulder. Allow 45 minutes to an hour to move through the exhibits and the outdoor site at a relaxed pace.

This is a very nice museum with a variety of indoor and outdoor exhibits. We enjoyed looking at the ruins outside (short walk) and the recreated ruins you can climb inside. There is a nice gift shop and clean bathrooms inside. We also got to meet the resident cat who greets guests.

Interesting stop on our way to drive the Devil's Backbone road and the Burr Trail to Singing Canyon and the Burr Trail Switchbacks. We spent a very enjoyable night across the street from this museum at Pole's Place Motel. The entire Boulder area is beautiful.
